“Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Let me do and I understand.”
-Confucius
The concept of Experiential Education, whether it has been called that or not, has been around for as long as humans have been alive. It is, quite simply, the notion of “learning by doing.” As the population grows exponentially, and the advent of technology becomes ever more prolific; the commonplace of experiential activity is increasingly overshadowed by, among other things, “virtual” activity such as social networking, the online gaming phenomenon, the fantastical nature of film and television, instant messaging, and the perpetual antre of alternative realities available to the fingertips of any who rest at the helm of a computer screen, a smart phone, or at television set.
Valley View sets out to offer a broad range of “real life”, “real time” experiences for the students in order to counter the complacency and malaise that is known to be derived from excessive “virtual” life activity. Throughout the year we provide a diverse array of opportunities for students to choose from that ultimately afford the individual autonomy and personal interest in developing their own unique life paths. The Experiential Education component at Valley View is evident within the school day, during evenings, and throughout the weekend. It takes on many forms ranging from school related community based field trips to after school trips to weekend and multi day trips locally, regionally, and abroad. Students engage in Community Service through several different local and regional venues, they participate in Academic and Career related field trip Explorations, they engage in a myriad of Wilderness based Adventures, and are known to focus on areas related to Environmental Stewardship.
Please read on to view the four different subsets that make up our Experiential Education model and visit the links to some of the recent endeavors that or students have engaged in.
