Helping Reluctant Readers Gain Confidence

The Accelerated Reader Program Fosters Independence, Motivation, and Comprehension

At Valley View, reading is meant to feel accessible and rewarding. Many students arrive having avoided books or lacking confidence as readers. The Accelerated Reader (AR) program helps shift that mindset by creating a reading experience that is structured, supportive, and confidence-building. Over time, students learn they are capable readers, often in ways they had not experienced before.

HOW IT WORKS

Student-Driven,
Teacher-Supported

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program supplements the English curriculum. It encourages students to:

  • Choose books matched to their interest and Lexile level

  • Read independently during designated times, including study hall

  • Take short quizzes to check comprehension and earn points

  • In collaboration with their teachers, students set personalized reading goals and celebrate their success at at a quarterly and end-of-year party.

  • On average, 95% of students meet or exceed their goals each year.

WHY IT WORKS

Reading as Progress,
Not Pressure

For many boys, AR becomes a turning point. It removes the pressure of reading aloud in class or keeping pace with group assignments, creating space to build fluency, and comprehension at a comfortable rate.

Over time, students who once identified as non-readers begin to:

  • Complete full-length books independently

  • Explore a variety of genres

  • Build reading stamina and comprehension

  • See reading as something they can succeed at and enjoy
